Signs You May Have a Cavity

The holidays are here, and that means that you will most likely attend parties, family events, and other festivities with endless amounts of delicious treats to eat. All of the holiday goodies can be hard to ignore, and there’s nothing wrong with indulging in a few sweets. However, if you aren’t careful, all of that sugary goodness can quickly lead to cavities.

At Clean Smile Dental, we are proud to offer dental care to your entire family! Whether you’re in need of a regular cleaning before the end of the year or you have a cavity from eating too many treats, our team is more than happy to help. Learn more about our dental care services by exploring our website, and give us a call to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, continue reading below for a few signs that you may have a cavity.

Toothache

When a cavity is beginning to form in your tooth, it can cause pain. However, there are some people who don’t experience any pain at the beginning of a cavity, which can make these cavities hard to diagnose without a professional. If left untreated, cavities will more often than not lead to a constant toothache, whether you’re eating, sleeping, or doing nothing at all.

If you notice significant pain in your tooth that doesn’t go away, then it could be a sign that you have a cavity. At this point, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your family dentist, as a cavity will only get worse if it isn’t filled.

Sensitive Teeth

There are some people who have naturally sensitive teeth when they drink hot or cold liquids or eat something really sweet. That being said, tooth sensitivity can also be a sign that you have a cavity, especially if your teeth haven’t been sensitive in the past.

Your tooth is comprised of different layers. Some cavities are shallow and only reside in the top layer of your tooth, which is called the enamel. More serious cavities break through the layer of enamel and eat away at the dentin. Dentin is the second layer of your tooth and it is comprised of a dense, porous material. As the cavity erodes through the enamel, it can form hollow canals leading to the sensitive tissue of the dentin. When you drink hot or cold liquids or eat something acidic or sticky, it can travel through the canals to the dentin, making your tooth more sensitive.

Pain When Eating

Eating should never be painful (unless, of course, you’re eating something really spicy). As mentioned above, pain can be a sign that you have a cavity, even if the pain isn’t constant. For example, if you are eating something soft, like a sandwich, and you bite down and feel a sharp pain, then there is a good chance that the pain is caused by a cavity, especially if this happens for an extended period of time.
